Diet of Teius oculatus (Sauria, Teiidae) in southern Brazil (Dom Feliciano, Rio Grande do Sul) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

We analyzed stomach contents of 58 specimens of Teius oculatus (D'Orbigny &amp; Bibron, 1837) (20 adult males, 17 adult females and 21 juveniles) captured in Dom Feliciano, RS, Brazil, to evaluate diet composition and sexual and ontogenetic variations in prey consumption. Diet was composed of 15 prey categories, all arthropods. Orthoptera was the most frequent prey type. Quantitatively, termites were the most important prey item (59.5%). There were no significant differences between the diets of adult males and females. Ontogenetic differences were found, mainly concerning volume of prey consumed. The objective of this study was to analyze the diet of fish species that use the mangrove vegetation for shelter and feeding in a river southeastern Brazil. The fieldwork, including collecting and underwater observations, was carried out in the dry (July and August 2004) and in the rainy season (February and March 2005) in order to assess the existence of seasonal variation in the diets. Seven kinds of food items were consumed, two of plant origin and five of animal origin. Crustaceans predominated in the diet of most species, either in the form of unidentified fragments or discriminated in eight groups. Redescription of the endangered hypoptopomatine catfish Parotocinclus spilurus (Fowler, 1941) (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the upper rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology

Abstract Parotocinclus spilurus (Fowler) was originally described as a species of Plecostomus based on six specimens collected in the rio Salgado, Icó Municipality, Ceará State, northeastern Brazil. Because the original description of P. spilurus is brief and uninformative, a detailed redescription of this endangered species based on the type series and on freshly collected topotypes was made. Data on osteology, intraspecific variation, sexual dimorphism and color pattern in life are presented for the first time, aiming at providing the necessary characters to differentiate the species from its congeners, as well as providing data on the distribution, habitat and conservation.

Tadpoles of the High-Andean Hyloxalus subpunctatus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) with description of larval variation and species distinction by larval morphology Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

This study redescribes the tadpoles of Hyloxalus subpunctatus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) based on larvae from the type locality and over most of its geographic range, including all stages of ontogenetic development. I describe tadpoles in the three developmental phases: (1) back-riding tadpoles, (2) free-swimming tadpoles, (3) froglets or individuals in metamorphosis. The larval morphology showed at least two types of variation: ontogenetic variation and variation within each developmental phase. In back-riding tadpoles, the variation in labial tooth rows suggests a pattern of the labial tooth row formation.
